Does Medicare Cover Home Health Care For Dementia?

By Geraldine

Home health care options for those living with dementia can be complex and bewildering, causing additional confusion and anxiety for loved ones. Understanding which services are covered (and which may not) before making decisions about care options for a loved one with dementia. Medicare covers various aspects of dementia care such as cognitive assessments and care planning, while many states also offer Medicaid coverage as additional support to offset the costs of care.

First step to understanding available home health services is consulting your physician or other medical provider. They can screen for dementia-like signs during annual wellness exams and offer guidance regarding next steps.

Medicare Part A covers up to 35 hours per week of home health services for individuals diagnosed with dementia who qualify as homebound. Services may include nursing, physical therapy and speech therapy services that address specific dementia-related symptoms.

Medicare covers home safety evaluations that can identify any hazards that could pose dangers to dementia patients in their home environment. Furthermore, starting in 2017, Medicare now covers care planning with medical professionals for people living with dementia so families can plan for future needs and needs – an initiative which has been proven by Alzheimer’s Association research to increase overall care quality and outcomes.

Medicare covers medications and equipment used to alleviate pain, sleep disturbances and other symptoms, while Medicare Advantage (Part C) plans can offer additional coverage not provided by Original Medicare – though these plans can be more costly with associated deductibles, copayments and coinsurance costs.

As dementia progresses, the amount of care required usually surpasses what can be provided at home. When this occurs, alternative options such as adult day care centers and respite care may provide significant assistance to caregivers by offering respite from caretaking duties while creating a stimulating and engaging environment for the person living with dementia during the daytime hours.

Medicare also helps cover the costs associated with hospice care for individuals living with dementia. Hospice is designed to offer comfort and support during terminal illness, such as dementia. Hospice services may be offered in homes, care facilities or hospitals – this type of care focuses on quality of life through support groups, spiritual counseling sessions and emotional and social assistance.
